In honor of this unofficial holiday, yet officially quizzical celebrated occaision, here is me in a life-size Darth Vader figurine photo booth at Comic-Con 2012 and four, or Fource rather, things about the Star Wars franchise I’m excited about. Well, cautiously optimistic about.
1. A TV Series That Goes Pound for Pound Against The Giants
If rumors are true, writing and casting has already begun on a dedicated bounty hunter story line. Finally, an opportunity to redeem and deliver on the perceived bad-ass nature of Star Wars bounty hunters. Boba Fett and anticlimactic not-so-bad-ass, death via Sarlaac Pit provides plenty room for improvement to say the least.
In our first Nerdycool podcast we talk briefly about how Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has suddenly become a compelling component of the larger Marvel film story arc but generally, the show barely stood on it’s own until the film and TV story lines converged. The campy comedy, corny “villain of the week” formula isn’t compelling, and frankly hasn’t been super emotionally engaging. That’s an entirely different discussion but the point I wanted to make is that fans are thirsting for a mature, dark, and more complex Star Wars story line akin to blockbuster series like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad. The bar is set high for quality TV content so let’s hope Rick McCallum and the LucasFilm team can make the stars align to secure the production budget, creative talent, and ward of interference to deliver on his vision. I am excite.
2. The Battlefront Game We’ve Been Waiting For
The last Battlefront released was Star Wars: Battlefront II in 2005 and since then, fans have been hungry for more. Arguably one of the best Star Wars games (We’re not getting into this topic at all!) of all time, a true next-gen successor is on it’s way, we just don’t know when. EA and Dice presented what is seemingly a pre-vis video at E3 2013 (see video below). If games like Titanfall and Infamous: Second Son are just the tip of the iceberg for next-gen games; add Battlefront to the mix and you’ve got a great combo. Let’s hope for more news on this at E3 2014.
3. More and better action figures.
Animated Boba Fett Maquette
Kotobukiya Luke vs Vader 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Vinyl Statue
1978 Star Wars: Holiday Special Wookie Family Prototype Figures
4. More Ridiculous Partnerships Ideas
I can deal with the insane influx of licensed products, promotions, and partnerships that come with any new Star Wars thing.. I have a set of Cantina shot glasses, Jedi and Sith lightsaber chopsticks, and enough fan-art t-shirts to get me through any Celebration. But when I see these burgers, I can’t help but cringe. I rarely dabble in fast food, save for the occasional sports event and/or a late night munchies run, but THESE burgers look disgusting! What’s even more strange is why a French fast food chain would do this, generally their cuisine is a step above the rest but I’m sure somebody, somewhere said, “Let’s make a black Darth Vader burger” and everyone agreed. While I ponder the next Black Vador burger, here are some 40 weird products to tide you over.
May the 4th be with you, happy Star Wars day.
